Hello World
The lesson
I'm building in public for accountability, not because the gurus said so.
Let's start with some brutal honesty. I don't typically use social media, and even though all the business gurus tell you that it's a waste of time, I'm going to tell you why I'm going against that advice.
For the last 3 years I've been on a journey. A journey to make myself more productive, less distracted, and maybe... just maybe... build something I can be proud of.
I'm turning 40 in January, and for as long as I can remember I've always wanted to be a successful businessman. More than that, I want to build and run multiple companies. I'm in love with and skilled at two main things:
- Problem Solving - Creating Structure
From the little I know about business, success relies heavily on those two things, so why not try my hand at it?
Not a midlife crisis
Now, before you're concerned that I'm going through some sort of midlife crisis... let me set the path straight. I'm not. In fact, not much in my life is going to change. My priorities will stay in focus:
1. God 2. Family 3. Career (my job at the CHC) 4. Hopes and Dreams....
I believe that order is not only correct, but it's the most Biblical. I'm choosing to love God first, called to love my wife and kids next, and called to have integrity and "whatever I do, do as if I'm serving God not man."
But that leaves the majority of my time eaten up by the things I hold the most value towards. The leftovers can go towards my hopes and dreams of building a business.
A little history
For a little contextual history: I am not completely ignorant of how business works. I've had Initial Care, Lighting Effects (both sold), and The Marketing Guru ventures. I learned many lessons along the way, but never reached what I would call true success... and honestly, I haven't put the effort into getting there.
Why? Mainly because I'm scared. It's so much easier to pretend I have what it takes to provide for my family and give back to my church and community than it is to face rejection. But... I'm sick and tired of pretending. My biggest struggle? I'm happy to get started on a project, but when the roadblocks hit, I tend to jump into something new.
Why social media again
So that brings me back to why I'm starting to use social media again after 3 long years. The answer? It's for accountability.
I am going to do a social experiment on myself to see if I have what it takes to push through the hard times and build something in public.
I'm David Birnie... and this experiment is what I'm calling 3amCEO.
Please consider following, and more importantly, pressuring me to build in public for the world to judge so that I can grow as a person and learn to become what I've always hoped.
